Openbox Money

Terms of use

Last updated October 31, 2026

These terms cover your use of Openbox Money, a personal finance app at openboxmoney.com. By creating an account or using Openbox Money, you agree to them and to our privacy policy.

Openbox Money and Premium

Openbox Money's features need Openbox Money Premium, a paid subscription for your household. Without it, you can look around a shared, read-only sample household. Members who joined during Openbox Money's private beta keep Premium free for life. You need to be at least 18 to create an account. Features may change, be added or be removed, and the service may be unavailable at times.

Premium subscription

  • Premium costs $7.99 a month or $79 a year, in US dollars, including any sales tax. The household's owner subscribes, and one subscription covers everyone in the household. Payments are processed by Stripe; Openbox Money never sees or stores your full card number.
  • Premium renews automatically at the end of each monthly or yearly period, and the price is charged to the payment method on file, until you cancel.
  • You can cancel at any time in Settings, under Billing (Manage billing opens Stripe's billing page). Premium stays on until the end of the period you've paid for, and you won't be charged again. Partial periods aren't refunded, except as described next.
  • Within 14 days of your household's first Premium payment, the owner can ask in Settings for a full refund of that payment, once per household. Openbox Money then refunds that payment, cancels the subscription and ends Premium, usually right away. If any of that can't be confirmed at once, Settings shows the request as pending and Openbox Money finishes it automatically; Premium may stay on until it's finished.
  • If a renewal payment fails, Premium stays on for 7 days from that failure while the payment method is updated; retrying the payment doesn't extend it. If it isn't paid by then, Premium ends.
  • When paid Premium ends, your history, categories and budgets stay in Openbox Money. Openbox Money emails the owner the date it will disconnect the household's banks, at least 7 days ahead, and disconnects them on or after that date. If you subscribe again, you reconnect each bank once.
  • If the price changes, we'll email the owner at least 30 days before the new price applies. It takes effect at the next renewal after that, and you can cancel before then.

Your account

  • Keep your sign-in details and devices secure, and tell us if you think someone else has used your account.
  • Two-factor sign-in (a passkey or an authenticator app) is required before you can connect a bank.
  • You're responsible for what happens under your account, and for the accuracy of what you enter or upload.

Bank connections

When you connect a bank, you authorize Openbox Money to receive read-only information about your accounts (balances, transactions, holdings and loan details) through Plaid, under Plaid's end user privacy policy. Openbox Money never sees your bank password and can't move money or make payments. You can disconnect a bank at any time in Accounts.

Connections are paused after 60 days away

To protect your accounts, if nobody in your household uses Openbox Money for 60 days, Openbox Money disconnects your bank connections and ends its access to them. Your accounts, history, categories and budgets stay in Openbox Money. When you come back, you'll be asked to reconnect each bank; Openbox Money then fills in the transactions from the time you were away, as far back as your bank provides them, without adding anything twice. Until you reconnect, balances and transactions from those banks won't update.

Not financial advice

Openbox Money is an educational and organizing tool. Budgets, safe-to-spend figures, savings suggestions, growth projections and the retirement readiness check are estimates based on your data and the assumptions shown; actual results will differ. Nothing in Openbox Money is investment, tax, legal or financial advice, or a recommendation to buy or sell anything, and Openbox Money isn't a fiduciary. For decisions about your situation, consider a licensed professional.

Check what matters

Categories, recurring bills, balances and alerts are worked out automatically and can be wrong, late or missing, including when a bank or file provides incomplete data. Check important figures against your bank's own statements, and don't rely on Openbox Money as your only reminder to pay a bill.

Pay bill shortcuts and other websites

Openbox Money doesn't process payments. “Pay bill” opens, in a new tab, a page you saved, a Google search limited to the company's own website, or a Google search for the company's pay page. Those sites belong to other companies, and Openbox Money isn't responsible for them. Check the address before you sign in or pay, and never enter payment details on a site you don't recognize. You can turn these shortcuts off in Settings.

Market prices

Stock, fund, crypto and metal prices come from third-party data services, may be delayed by 15 minutes or more, and are for information only.

Acceptable use

Use Openbox Money only for your own or your household's finances. Don't try to access other people's data, get around security or limits, interfere with the service, or use it for anything unlawful. We may suspend accounts that do.

Ending your use

Your household's owner can download a copy of the household's financial records in Settings at any time. You can delete your account at any time in Settings. If you're the only member of your household, that disconnects its banks and permanently deletes its data. If you share the household with others, you leave it, and its records and bank connections stay for them. See the privacy policy for how long backups last.

Disclaimers and limits

Openbox Money is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows. To the fullest extent the law allows, Openbox Money and its owner aren't liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for decisions you make based on information in Openbox Money, and our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you've paid for Openbox Money in the 12 months before it.

Changes

We may update these terms. If a change matters, we'll tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect, and continuing to use Openbox Moneyafterward means you accept it.
