Delete your Openbox Money account
Last updated
How to delete your Openbox Money account, what's deleted and what's kept. Everything here works in a web browser at openboxmoney.com; you don't need to install anything. The privacy policy has the full details of what Openbox Money collects.
Delete it yourself
- Sign in to Openbox Money and open Settings.
- Scroll to Danger zone at the bottom and choose Delete account.
- Read what will happen, then choose I understand, continue.
- Type DELETE and choose Delete everything. If you use an authenticator app for two-step sign-in, you may be asked for a code from it first.
Before you delete
- Want a copy? Your household's owner can download the household's financial records in Settings, under Your data.
- Paying for Premium? If you're the only person in your household and pay for Premium, deleting your account cancels the subscription with Stripe right away, so you won't be charged again. Time already paid for isn't refunded; within 14 days of your first payment, choose Ask for a refund in Settings under Billing first. The refund is a full refund of your household's first payment if the owner asks within 14 days, in Settings under Billing, while that first subscription is still the one you have. Once per household. The refund cancels the subscription and ends Premium. If other people share your household, deleting your account leaves its paid Premium as it is.
- Just want a clean slate? Start over, also in Danger zone, clears your data but keeps your account. In a shared household, only its owner can start over.
What's deleted
If you're the only person in your household:
- When you confirm, every connected bank is disconnected and Openbox Money's access through Plaid is revoked, before anything is deleted. If that can't be done for every bank, your account and data stay saved and you can try again.
- Your household and everything in it are permanently deleted: accounts, transactions, budgets, bills, rules, net worth history and alerts.
If you share your household
- If you're its owner, remove the other people first (Settings, under Household), then delete your account. Ownership can't be handed to someone else yet.
- If someone else owns it, deleting your account takes you out of the household. Any banks you connected to it are disconnected, with Openbox Money's access through Plaid revoked, and removed with their accounts. Everything else in the household stays for the other people in it, except Premium from the private beta: if the household has it through your account, the household loses it when you go.
- If someone else owns it and you want to stop sharing but keep your account, choose Leave this household in Settings, under Household. Leaving also disconnects the banks you connected and removes them with their accounts, as deleting does.
Your sign-in
However you delete your account, your sign-in is deleted with it: your login, passkeys and two-step setup stop working, and you're signed out. Coming back later means starting from scratch with a new account, and while Openbox Money is invite-only, a new invitation.
What's kept
- Copies of deleted data in backups expire on their own: our database provider's on its schedule, and our own encrypted backups after 90 days.
- If someone at Openbox Money opened a page or took an action about your account in our admin tools, the record of it is kept for 2 years, even after your account is deleted. Records about one account hold that account's ID, never your financial details.
- If a household that bought or started buying Premium is deleted, we keep its Stripe customer, subscription and first-payment references and its refund status until we've confirmed nothing more can be charged or refunded, then 90 days more.
- If your household paid for Premium, Stripe keeps its own records of the subscription and payments. Your card details went to Stripe, not to Openbox Money.
- Plaid's own records are covered by Plaid's end user privacy policy.
- In a shared household, the household's records stay for the other people in it, as above.
